Last December, BBC Essex axed the eclectic, surreal Sunday nostalgia show hosted by larger-than-life showbiz agent Eric ‘Bubbalah’ Hall. The decision made no sense. It was a wildly popular show, and knowing BBC local radio finances, I’m guessing that Hall was being paid buttons to do it. It was, therefore, with deep joy that I learned that Eric was back, this time on Romford-based commercial station Time 107.5FM. There’s no catch-up facility, so you’ll have to listen live between 4pm and 6pm every Sunday.
This would appear to be the perfect occasion on which to share with you one of my favourite moments from the old BBC Essex show. It features Stan from Chadwell Heath, who can work an electric organ but can’t work a tape recorder. I cut the music out at the time, so the recording runs for 12 minutes, but on air this went on for the best part of half an hour. “You’ll never get this one, Eric,” Stan insisted. This sort of caper is exactly why Marconi put in all those years of sweat and toil.
